Descript

Descript is a video and podcast editor from the company of the same name that works like a document: edit the transcript and the media changes with it. Underlord, its AI co-editor, makes cuts, clips and fixes from a prompt. Podcasters, YouTubers and marketing teams use it on macOS, Windows and the web.

Key features

Text-based editing

Descript transcribes your recording and edits the video whenever you cut, paste or rewrite words in the transcript.

Underlord co-editor

An agentic assistant that turns a raw recording into a tight cut, answers prompts and runs Descript's AI tools for you.

Studio Sound and filler-word removal

Cleans up noisy audio and strips ums and ahs, each capped at 30 AI credits per file so long recordings stay affordable.

Create Clips

Finds highlight moments in a long recording and cuts them into short vertical clips for social platforms.

Rooms recording

Records remote guests in the browser and bills the session length once, not per participant.

Translation and avatars

Business plans translate and dub video into 30+ languages with proofreading and generate custom avatars from a photo or text.

Use cases

  • Cut a 90-minute interview by deleting paragraphs of the transcript instead of scrubbing a timeline.
  • Ask Underlord for six short vertical clips from a webinar, then caption and publish them the same day.
  • Fix a guest's noisy hotel-room audio with Studio Sound before publishing the episode.
  • Record a remote podcast in Rooms, then edit both tracks as a single document.

What is Descript?

Descript turns a recording into a transcript you can edit like a Word document. Deleting a sentence removes it from the video and audio, and moving a paragraph reorders the footage. On top of that sits Underlord, an AI co-editor that can make a first cut, pull clips, write captions and apply effects from a prompt.

What stands out

  • One tool for the whole show. Recording, transcription, multitrack editing, effects and publishing live in the same project.
  • Predictable AI costs on the basics. Studio Sound and filler-word removal are capped at 30 credits per use.
  • Team-ready. Creator scales to 3 people and Business to 5, with Brand Studio and priority support at the top.

Limitations

Usage is metered twice: media minutes for what you import or record, and AI credits for anything generative. Neither rolls over, and top-ups are only available from Creator upwards. Free exports are 720p with a watermark, and the free AI credit allowance is a single 100-credit grant that never refills. There is no native mobile app, so editing happens on a desktop or in the browser.

Descript FAQ

Yes, there is a permanent free plan with 60 media minutes a month, 100 one-time AI credits and 720p exports that carry a Descript watermark. Watermark-free 1080p export starts on the $24 Hobbyist plan.

Media minutes count what you upload or record, including Rooms sessions, with images counted as one second each. AI credits pay for Underlord, Studio Sound, avatars and generated media. Neither rolls over.

Creator and Business. Hobbyist exports at 1080p without a watermark, the free plan is limited to 720p with a watermark, and Creator adds unlimited royalty-free stock media plus generative video models.

Yes. Descript says every Underlord message spends a few AI credits, and when Underlord runs a tool you pay for both the agent's reasoning and the tool itself, so costs vary by task.

Yes. Descript runs at web.descript.com in a browser, and the desktop app needs macOS 14 Sonoma or Windows 11 or newer. Imports and edits can also be triggered through Descript's API and MCP server.
