Wordtune

Wordtune is an AI rewriting, summarizing and grammar assistant built by AI21 Labs. It suggests alternative phrasings and tone changes for English text inside a web editor, browser extensions and an iPhone app. It suits non-native English speakers, students and professionals who want sentence-level help rather than a tool that writes whole documents for them.

Key features

Rewrite suggestions

Offers several context-aware rewrites of a highlighted sentence so you can pick the phrasing that fits your meaning.

Casual and formal tones

Switches a sentence between casual and formal registers in one click, which helps when the same message goes to different audiences.

AI summaries

Condenses long text or a video into short takeaways; Basic allows 3 summaries a month and Advanced allows 15.

Continue writing and Spices

Extends a paragraph, explains a point, adds emphasis or writes a conclusion based on what you have already typed.

Write in, rewrite out

Accepts input in languages such as Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic, Hindi, Korean, Hebrew, Russian, German, French or Portuguese and answers in English.

Grammar and spelling checks

Corrects spelling and grammar with no daily cap, including on the free Basic plan.

Extensions and iPhone app

Runs in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Arc through extensions, plus an iPhone app that works with most writing apps.

Use cases

  • Rewrite a stiff cover letter paragraph into clearer, more natural English before applying.
  • Draft a message in your first language and get English suggestions to send to colleagues.
  • Summarize a long article to decide whether it is worth reading in full.
  • Soften the tone of a support reply before it reaches an unhappy customer.

Free trial

Basic is free with 10 rewrites a day. Advanced is $13.99/month, and Unlimited is $19.99/month. Billed annually, the plans page now shows Advanced at $4.89/month and Unlimited at $6.99/month, down from $6.99 and $9.99. Both paid plans start with a 3-day free trial.

Ways to save

  • Annual billing cuts the price by more than half: Unlimited drops from $19.99 to $6.99 a month at the current annual rate.
  • Students and educators with a valid .edu address, and nonprofit staff, can contact support for a 30% discount on monthly or annual plans.
  • The 3-day trial requires payment details and Wordtune does not give refunds, so cancel before it ends if you are unsure.

What is Wordtune?

Wordtune started as a sentence rewriter and now covers rewriting, summaries, grammar checks and short AI expansions. You highlight text in its editor or in a supported browser and it proposes alternatives; it does not silently rewrite a whole document for you.

Plans compared

  • Basic ($0): 10 rewrites and AI suggestions per day, 3 summaries per month, unlimited grammar checks.
  • Advanced: 30 rewrites per day, 15 summaries per month, AI recommendations.
  • Unlimited: uncapped rewrites and summaries, vocabulary and fluency improvements, premium support.

Business plans exist separately and add SAML SSO and centralized billing.

Limitations

Wordtune is English-first: other languages go in, English comes out. There is no Android app, no Safari extension and no Mac desktop app. Refunds are not offered, only cancellation before the next cycle. The steady stream of updates that marked its early years has dried up, so check that the feature set you need exists today rather than expecting new ones.

Wordtune FAQ

Yes, there is a permanent free Basic plan. It covers 10 rewrites and AI suggestions per day, 3 AI summaries per month, and unlimited spelling and grammar checks. Heavier use needs Advanced or Unlimited.

Only as input. You can paste Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic, Hindi, Korean, Hebrew, Russian, German, French or Portuguese, but paraphrasing returns English, and Wordtune says its generative features can only promise English output.

No. Wordtune's help center says Android is not supported and the Mac desktop app, once a limited beta, has been discontinued. Mac users work in the web editor or the Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Arc extensions.

Advanced caps you at 30 rewrites and AI suggestions a day plus 15 summaries a month. Unlimited removes those caps, adds vocabulary, clarity and fluency improvements, and includes premium support.

AI21 Labs has announced no shutdown and Wordtune still sells plans, but its blog has not published since mid-2024 and AI21's own site now promotes enterprise AI products instead.
