OpenAI expanded ChatGPT ads to 26 more countries on October 21, 2026, bringing the total to 89. Fourteen of the new markets are in Latin America, including Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Peru, and the other 12 are in Africa, Europe and Asia. As of October 22, 2026, ads appear only on ChatGPT Free and Go, while Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu stay ad-free.
OpenAI’s announcement names only 11 of the 26 countries. We rebuilt the full list from OpenAI’s own data, then checked which ChatGPT plans show ads, what the ads look like and the cheapest ways to avoid them.
Which 26 countries got ChatGPT ads on October 21, 2026?
The 26 new ChatGPT ad markets are 14 Latin American countries plus 12 in Africa, Europe and Asia. OpenAI’s announcement names Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Nigeria, South Africa, Serbia, Ukraine, Cambodia, Bangladesh and Pakistan. It also says over 100,000 advertisers have run campaigns since ads launched just over eight months ago.
We found the other 15 countries by comparing OpenAI’s Ads Manager availability page, which lists 89 countries on October 22, 2026, with an archived copy from October 12, 2026 that listed 63. Exactly 26 countries were added, and none were removed.
| Region | Countries added on October 21, 2026 |
|---|---|
| Latin America and the Caribbean (14) | Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Uruguay |
| Africa (3) | Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa |
| Europe (2) | Serbia, Ukraine |
| South Asia (3) | Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka |
| Central Asia and the Caucasus (3) | Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan |
| Southeast Asia (1) | Cambodia |
A few precision notes for Spanish-speaking readers:
- Mexico isn’t new. ChatGPT ads went live in Mexico and Brazil in mid-August 2026, which PPC Land reported as OpenAI’s first Spanish- and Portuguese-language markets.
- Spain joined in August. Spain was part of the 31-country European rollout OpenAI announced on August 18, 2026.
- Not on the list. Venezuela, Honduras and Nicaragua aren’t on OpenAI’s list as of October 22, 2026.
- Puerto Rico appears as its own entry on OpenAI’s list.
The availability page tracks where businesses can buy ads. For users, OpenAI’s help center says ads roll out gradually to eligible Free and Go users, so not everyone in a new market sees them on day one.
Where else does ChatGPT show ads?
ChatGPT ads now run in 89 countries, after starting as a US-only test on February 9, 2026. The rollout sped up from August, when Latin America’s two largest markets, Europe, India, the Middle East and North Africa joined within weeks.
| Date (2026) | ChatGPT ads milestone |
|---|---|
| February 9 | Ad test starts in the United States on Free and Go |
| Mid-August | Mexico and Brazil go live, for 9 markets in total (PPC Land) |
| August 18 | OpenAI announces 31 European markets, including Germany, France, Spain and Italy, starting the following week |
| August 29 | India goes live (PPC Land) |
| August 31 | OpenAI reports over 40 countries and opens self-service ad buying across India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa |
| September 23 | Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Taiwan join, for over 60 countries |
| October 21 | 26 more countries, for 89 in total |
OpenAI’s Southeast Asia post also lists earlier launches in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea and India. Canada, the United Kingdom, Turkey, Israel, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are on OpenAI’s list too.
Which ChatGPT plans have ads?
ChatGPT ads appear only on Free and Go, according to OpenAI’s help center and its October 21, 2026 announcement. Every other plan is ad-free.
| ChatGPT plan or mode | Ads? | Price and notes |
|---|---|---|
| Logged out (no account) | Can appear | $0; only ads appropriate for all audiences |
| Free | Yes | $0 |
| Free with Ads-Free mode | No | $0; lower message limits, no image generation or deep research |
| Go | Yes | $8/month in the US; Ads-Free mode not available |
| Plus | No | $20/month in the US |
| Pro | No | $100, $200 or $500 a month, depending on usage tier |
| Business, Enterprise, Edu | No | Work and school plans |
| Accounts identified as under 18 | No | Any plan; OpenAI uses account age data and age prediction |
| Temporary Chat | No | Any plan; chats don’t use or update memory |
Prices outside the US can differ. OpenAI’s help center says it bills in US dollars and offers local-currency billing in a limited set of countries, and the ChatGPT pricing page shows the price for yours.
Does ChatGPT Go have ads?
Yes. ChatGPT Go, which costs $8/month in the US, can show ads in every market where ChatGPT ads run. OpenAI’s October 21, 2026 post says ads will appear “only on the Free and Go plans.”
Go also can’t use Ads-Free mode, which OpenAI’s help center describes as a Free-plan option. A Go subscriber who wants no ads has two choices: drop back to Free and switch on Ads-Free, or upgrade to Plus. Go still raises Free’s limits on image generation, file uploads and data analysis, so it makes sense if you need more capacity and don’t mind a sponsored unit under some answers.
What do ChatGPT ads look like?
A ChatGPT ad is one labeled unit below a response, with one or more images, a title, a description and a link. OpenAI says every ad is clearly labeled and shown separately from the answer.
- Placement. OpenAI’s help center says you see one ad unit below a ChatGPT response, which may contain one or several images.
- A short intro line. OpenAI’s engineering post says its ad system also writes a short, neutral preamble explaining how the ad relates to your conversation, kept separate from the advertiser’s text.
- Image-generation ads. OpenAI is testing a multi-image visual ad that shows while ChatGPT creates an image and disappears when the image is done. It announced the test on October 5, 2026 for Free and Go users, starting in the US.
- Where ads never appear. ChatGPT doesn’t place ads near sensitive topics such as personal health, mental health or politics, doesn’t currently allow political ads and shows no ads in Temporary Chats.
- Ad menu. The ••• menu on each ad offers Hide ad, Report ad, About this ad and Ask ChatGPT.
OpenAI says ads run on separate systems from the chat model and don’t influence answers. The engineering post adds that ChatGPT doesn’t delay a response to wait for an ad; if the ad isn’t ready in time, none is shown for that turn.
Can advertisers see your ChatGPT chats?
No. OpenAI says advertisers never receive your chats, chat history, memories, name, email, precise location or IP address, only aggregated numbers such as total views and clicks. It also says it never sells user data to advertisers.
What ChatGPT itself uses to pick ads depends on your settings:
- Always: what you’re discussing in the current chat, plus general location and language.
- With personalized ads on: past chats and memory, and how you interact with ads.
- With personalized ads off: ads still appear, matched to your current chat only.
The controls sit in Settings > Ads controls on the web and iOS. You can turn off personalization, stop past chats and memory from shaping ads, view your ad history and topics, and delete ads data, which OpenAI says can take up to 30 days to be fully removed. Personalized ads aren’t initially available in the European Economic Area, which includes Spain, or in Switzerland. If you message an advertiser through an ad, the advertiser sees only the messages you send it.
How do you remove ads in ChatGPT?
You remove ChatGPT ads either by switching Free to Ads-Free mode at no cost or by paying for Plus or a higher plan. Turning off ad personalization does not remove ads; it only changes how they’re chosen.
Free: switch to Ads-Free mode
In Settings > Ads controls, choose Change plan to go ad-free, then Reduce message limits. OpenAI says Ads-Free removes ads but brings lower usage limits and drops some tools, such as image generation and deep research. When you hit a limit, a banner offers Upgrade or Show ads to return to the ad-supported version. Temporary Chats never show ads either, though they don’t use or update memory.
Cheapest paid plan without ads: Plus
ChatGPT Plus at $20/month in the US is the cheapest paid ChatGPT plan without ads. OpenAI bills Go, Plus and Pro monthly only, with no annual discount, so there’s no cheaper yearly route. Our guide to saving money on AI subscriptions covers other ways to cut the bill.
Students and work accounts
US college and graduate students can get 4 months of Plus free through OpenAI’s Back to School offer if they claim it by October 31, 2026. The offer is limited to students at eligible US degree-granting institutions, so students in Latin America can’t use it. Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts from an employer or university are ad-free as well. See AI student discounts for offers open to students outside the US.
Which AI chatbots don’t show ads?
Claude is the clearest ad-free alternative to ChatGPT: in a February 4, 2026 post, Anthropic wrote that “Claude will remain ad-free.” The pledge rules out sponsored links next to conversations, advertiser influence on responses and product placements users didn’t ask for.
- Claude. Claude has a Free plan, and Claude Pro costs $20/month, or $17/month billed yearly ($200 up front). Anthropic added that if it ever revisits the approach, it will explain why.
- Gemini. As of October 22, 2026, we found no announcement of ads in the Gemini app. In April 2026, Google’s chief business officer Philipp Schindler said Google is open to ads in the standalone Gemini app, Android Authority reported, citing Business Insider. Gemini’s cheapest paid tier, Google AI Plus, costs $4.99/month in the US, and students in 140+ markets can get a free year of Google AI Plus until December 31, 2026. Bolivia is excluded from that offer.

Bottom line
ChatGPT ads now reach 89 countries, and in all of them the rule is the same: Free and Go can show ads, and everything from Plus up can’t.
- Free users in the new countries: expect a labeled ad under some answers. If ads bother you more than limits, switch on Ads-Free mode in Settings > Ads controls.
- Go subscribers: Go costs $8/month in the US and still shows ads. If ads are the problem, Plus is the ad-free step up.
- Want no ads and full features: Plus at $20/month in the US is the cheapest ChatGPT plan without ads. US college students should claim the 4 free months before October 31, 2026.
- Ad-free on principle: Claude has publicly committed to no ads, and its Free plan costs nothing.
