How to Save Money on AI Subscriptions (2026): 12 Ways to Cut Your AI Bill

To save money on AI subscriptions, keep one main assistant, pay yearly where the vendor offers it (Claude Pro is $200/year, about $17/month instead of $20), use free tiers for light tasks, and claim student, device and trial offers before they renew. As of October 2026, ChatGPT has no yearly plan, but ChatGPT Go costs $8/month.

Key takeaways
  • Claude Pro costs $200 a year billed up front, about $17 a month, versus $20 monthly; Claude Max and every ChatGPT plan bill monthly only.
  • Cheaper tiers cover much everyday use: ChatGPT Go costs $8/month and Google AI Plus $4.99/month, and both raise their free plans' limits.
  • Claude's session limits drain faster on weekdays 13:00–19:00 UTC, so moving heavy work outside that window stretches a Pro plan before you pay for Max.
  • Paid Claude plans can turn on usage credits at standard API rates when you hit a limit, instead of upgrading from Pro to Max 5x at $100/month.
  • Pixel 10 Pro, Pro XL and Pro Fold buyers get 12 months of Google AI Pro, normally $19.99/month, if they buy and redeem by October 31, 2026.

The fastest way to save money on AI subscriptions is to keep one main assistant, pay yearly only for tools you use every week, and let free tiers, credits and promotions cover the rest. Prices and limits change often, so every number below is as of October 2026 and comes from vendor pages we checked in September and October.

The real problem is stacking. ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro, Perplexity Pro and Cursor Pro each cost $20/month, and Google AI Pro costs $19.99. Subscribe to all five and you pay $99.99 a month, about the price of one Claude Max 5x plan.

How much do AI subscriptions cost in 2026?

Most flagship AI plans cost about $20 a month, cheaper tiers sit between $4.99 and $10, and power-user plans start around $100.

  • About $20/month: ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro, Perplexity Pro and Cursor Pro at $20; Google AI Pro at $19.99.
  • Under $15/month: Google AI Plus at $4.99, ChatGPT Go at $8 and GitHub Copilot Pro at $10.
  • $100 and up: Claude Max 5x at $100 and Max 20x at $200, ChatGPT Pro at $100, $200 or $500, and Google AI Ultra from $99.99.

The 12 ways below are grouped by effort: billing changes first, then free tiers and credits, then promotions and overlap.

How do you pay less for the AI plans you keep?

Switch weekly-use tools to yearly billing, drop to the cheapest tier that covers your work, and buy credits for occasional overflow instead of upgrading.

1. Switch to yearly billing where it’s offered

Yearly billing is the simplest saving, but only some AI vendors offer it. According to Anthropic’s pricing page, Claude Pro costs $20/month or $17/month with the annual discount, billed as $200 up front. Notion Plus drops from $12 to $10 per member per month, and Grammarly Pro from $30/month to $144/year.

ChatGPT is the exception: OpenAI doesn’t offer yearly billing for Go, Plus or Pro, and Claude Max is monthly-only too. See the full table further down.

2. Pick the cheapest tier that covers your use

ChatGPT Go costs $8/month and, according to OpenAI’s help center, raises Free’s limits on uploads, image creation and memory for less than half the Plus price, though it may show ads. Google AI Plus costs $4.99/month, doubles Gemini’s free usage limits and adds 400 GB of storage.

At the top end, ChatGPT Pro at $100 has the same core features as the pricier Pro tiers, with 5x Plus usage. On Claude, Max 5x at $100 is half the price of Max 20x; our Claude Pro vs Max comparison shows when each makes sense.

3. Buy usage credits instead of upgrading

Paid Claude plans can turn on usage credits to keep working at standard API rates when you hit a limit, so an occasional busy week doesn’t force a jump from Pro at $20 to Max 5x at $100. OpenAI lets Plus and Pro users buy ChatGPT credits for Codex instead of upgrading the whole plan, and GitHub Copilot lets you set a dollar budget with alerts at 75%, 90% and 100%.

The rule flips if you run out every week. On Grok, for example, upgrading usually costs less per action than Extra Usage Credits, which are charged at standard rates.

How do you use free tiers and credits smartly?

Let free tiers carry light tasks, schedule heavy Claude work outside peak hours, and top up with credit packs only in busy months.

4. Let free tiers cover light use

Free plans now cover a lot of everyday work. Claude Free includes web search, memory, connectors and file creation. ChatGPT Free offers unlimited text chats, subject to abuse guardrails, with ads below answers in the US. Gemini’s free plan includes Deep Research and 15 GB of storage.

  • Perplexity Free includes citations and 3 Pro Searches a day.
  • GitHub Copilot Free includes 2,000 code completions a month.
  • NotebookLM’s free tier allows up to 100 notebooks with 50 sources each.
  • Suno’s Free Plan gives 50 credits a day, about 10 songs.

Our guide to the best free AI tools covers more.

5. Work off-peak on Claude

Claude’s 5-hour session limits drain faster on weekdays from 13:00–19:00 UTC on Free, Pro, Max and Team plans, a rule in place since March 27, 2026. Outside that window and all weekend, limits drain at normal speed, and weekly limits don’t change. Claude Code on Pro and Max has been exempt since May 6, 2026.

Moving long chats and file-heavy work off-peak stretches the plan you already pay for, which can delay an upgrade to Max. Claude Watch shows the live peak status in your time zone.

6. Top up with credit packs in busy months

Credit packs beat a permanent upgrade when only one month is heavy. Kling’s purchased credit packs stay valid for 2 years, and a $20 Genspark pack adds 7,500 credits for 3 months without changing tiers. Midjourney sells extra Fast GPU time at $4 per hour, while Standard and higher plans include unlimited Relax-mode images. Suno’s top-up credits never expire, but you need an active subscription to spend them.

How do you catch AI promotions before they end?

Claim student and device offers you qualify for, time free trials, and check live promotions before paying full price.

7. Claim student and education pricing

Students get some of the largest AI discounts we track. Eligible US college students get a free year of Google AI Pro if they redeem by December 31, 2026, and 4 free months of ChatGPT Plus if they claim by October 31, 2026. Perplexity Education Pro costs $10/month instead of $20, Mistral Pro is $5.99/month for verified students, and GitHub Copilot Student is free. Our AI student discounts guide covers eligibility and renewal terms.

8. Get AI bundled with hardware you’re buying anyway

A new Pixel 10 Pro, Pro XL or Pro Fold includes 12 months of Google AI Pro if you buy and redeem it by October 31, 2026, according to Google’s Pixel help page. Japan gets 6 months, and the base Pixel 10 includes 6 months of Google One Premium, not AI Pro. Pixel 11 Pro models include 6 months of Google AI Pro, redeemable until October 31, 2027. Every Pixel trial renews at the standard price unless you cancel; details on our Pixel 10 Pro offer page.

9. Use free trials, then cancel before renewal

Free trials save money only if you decide before the renewal date. Grammarly Pro has a 7-day free trial and emails a reminder 2 days before it ends. Microsoft offers a one-month free trial of Microsoft 365 Personal, Family and Premium, with terms that vary by region. Canva’s Pro and Business trial is available once per account and once per payment method, and its AI allowance during the trial equals Canva Free’s.

10. Time sign-ups to live promotions

Short promotions can cut a month’s cost sharply. As of October 12, 2026:

  • Claude artifacts: through October 15, 2026, work after creating or editing an artifact counts 50% less toward session limits on Free, Pro, Max and Team. See the artifact promotion.
  • ElevenLabs: for new subscribers, the first month of Starter costs $1 instead of $6 until October 18, and Creator $11 instead of $22.
  • Adobe Firefly: new subscribers in the US and UK pay 30% less for the first year of Pro Plus or Premium until October 21, 2026, with a 12-month commitment.
  • Gemini API: developers pay half the regular rate for Gemini 3.8 Flash until December 31, 2026.

Our deals page lists every live offer, and the promotions calendar shows when each one ends.

How do you stop paying twice for the same AI features?

Keep one main assistant that bundles the extras you use, and check what your employer, school or team plan already covers.

11. Keep one subscription instead of three overlapping ones

ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro and Google AI Pro all handle chat, research and file analysis, so most people need only one. Pick by the extra you would otherwise pay for separately:

  • ChatGPT Plus includes OpenAI’s Codex coding agent.
  • Claude Pro includes Claude Code.
  • Google AI Pro bundles 5 TB of storage and YouTube Premium Lite, and every paid Gemini plan can replace a separate Google One storage subscription.

Our ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini comparison helps you choose.

12. Bill team seats yearly and check what’s already covered

Team plans follow the same yearly logic. Claude Team Standard seats cost $25/month or $20/month billed annually, ChatGPT Business is $25 per user monthly or $20 billed annually, and Perplexity Enterprise Pro is $400 a year per seat versus $40 a month. Microsoft 365 Family shares apps and a 2 TB storage pool with up to six people for $12.99/month, but Copilot features work only for the subscription owner.

Monthly vs yearly price: which AI plans are cheaper annually?

Yearly billing is cheaper on every AI plan below that offers it, from about $17 instead of $20 a month on Claude Pro to $12 instead of $30 on Grammarly Pro.

Tool and plan Monthly billing Yearly billing
Claude Pro $20/month $200/year (about $17/month)
Claude Max 5x $100/month Not offered
ChatGPT Plus $20/month Not offered
Perplexity Pro $20/month $17/month, billed annually
Notion Plus $12/member/month $10/member/month
Grammarly Pro $30/month $144/year ($12/month on average)
QuillBot Premium $19.95/month $99.95/year (about $8.33/month)
Midjourney Standard $30/month $24/month, paid upfront
Gamma Plus $12/seat/month $9/seat/month
Suno Pro $10/month $96/year ($8/month)
ElevenLabs Creator $22/month $18.33/month (10 months’ price for a year)

Prices are in USD as listed in our tool profiles, checked against vendor pages in September and October 2026.

How do you audit your AI subscriptions?

List every AI charge, cancel what you didn’t use last month, and move the rest to the cheapest tier and billing cycle that fits.

Start with your card statements and App Store and Google Play subscriptions for the last 3 months. Merge overlapping assistants, then put every renewal and trial end date in your calendar. Repeat the audit every quarter to catch plan changes, such as ChatGPT Pro’s new $500 tier.

Bottom line

Most people can cut their AI bill by keeping one $20 assistant, using free tiers for everything else, and paying yearly only for tools they open every week.

  • Light users: stay on free plans, or try ChatGPT Go at $8/month or Google AI Plus at $4.99/month.
  • Daily Claude users: pay $200/year for Pro, work outside 13:00–19:00 UTC on weekdays, and add usage credits before considering Max.
  • Heavy ChatGPT users: there’s no yearly discount, so start with ChatGPT Pro at $100 rather than higher tiers.
  • Students: claim Google AI Pro’s free year and the other offers in our student guide.
  • Phone shoppers: buy a Pixel 10 Pro by October 31, 2026 if you want a year of Google AI Pro included.

How to audit your AI subscriptions

Step by step

1
List every AI charge

Go through your card statements and your App Store and Google Play subscriptions for the last 3 months, and write down each AI tool, plan and price.

2
Mark what you actually used

Note which tools you opened every week. Anything you haven't used in a month goes on the cancel or downgrade list.

3
Find the overlap

If two subscriptions do the same job, such as chat or research, keep the one whose bundle you use, like Codex, Claude Code or Google storage.

4
Downgrade or switch billing

Move light-use tools to a free or cheaper tier, and switch the tools you use every week to yearly billing where the vendor offers it.

5
Put renewals in your calendar

Add every renewal and trial end date to your calendar, and check PromoClock's deals calendar before you pay full price.

Frequently asked questions

Most flagship AI plans cost about $20 a month: ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro, Perplexity Pro and Cursor Pro are $20, and Google AI Pro is $19.99. Cheaper tiers include Google AI Plus at $4.99, ChatGPT Go at $8 and GitHub Copilot Pro at $10. Power-user plans run from $100 to $200 a month or more, such as Claude Max and ChatGPT Pro.

ChatGPT Plus costs $20/month, and OpenAI offers no yearly discount on Go, Plus or Pro. Eligible US college students can get 4 months of Plus free if they claim it by October 31, 2026; it then renews at $20/month. If you mainly need higher free-tier limits, ChatGPT Go costs $8/month but may show ads.

Yes. Anthropic's pricing page lists Claude Pro at $20/month, or $17/month with the annual discount, which is $200 billed up front. Max 5x ($100/month) and Max 20x ($200/month) are billed monthly only. Team Standard seats drop from $25 to $20 per seat per month on annual billing.

Yes, for tools you have used every week for a few months. Grammarly Pro falls from $30/month to $144/year, Notion Plus from $12 to $10 per member per month, and Midjourney saves 20%. You pay up front, though, and AI plans change often, so keep monthly billing for anything you're still testing.

Buy usage credits if you hit Claude Pro's limit only occasionally: paid plans can turn them on to keep working at standard API rates. If you hit the limit most weeks, Max 5x at $100/month gives five times Pro's usage per session. First try moving heavy work outside weekday peak hours, 13:00–19:00 UTC.
