Claude Pro costs $20/month, or $200/year (about $17/month), and suits most daily users. Claude Max costs $100/month for 5x Pro's usage per session or $200/month for 20x, billed monthly only, and adds Fable within plan limits and higher output limits. Upgrade only if Pro's limits stop your work most weeks.

Key takeaways
  • Claude Pro costs $20/month or $200/year billed up front, about $17/month, while Max is monthly-only at $100 (Max 5x) or $200 (Max 20x).
  • Max 5x gives 5x Pro's usage per 5-hour session for 5x Pro's monthly price, and Max 20x gives 20x the usage for 10x the price.
  • On Pro, Fable 5 and 5.1 run only on usage credits, while Max 5x and Max 20x can spend up to 50% of their weekly limits on Fable.
  • Every paid Claude plan includes Claude Code, and since May 6, 2026 Claude Code on Pro and Max is exempt from the weekday 13:00–19:00 UTC peak-hour reduction.
  • Usage credits let Pro and Max keep working past their limits at standard API rates, prepaid from Settings > Usage, without changing plans.

Claude Pro costs $20/month, or $200/year billed up front, and it covers most people who use Claude every day. Claude Max costs $100/month for 5x Pro’s usage or $200/month for 20x, and it pays off when Pro’s limits block your work most weeks, when Claude Code runs for hours a day, or when you want Fable without paying extra. All prices and limits below are as of October 2026, taken from Anthropic’s pricing page and help center.

How much do Claude Pro and Max cost in 2026?

Claude Pro is $20/month or $200/year, Max 5x is $100/month and Max 20x is $200/month, according to Anthropic’s pricing page. Max has no yearly option.

Plan Monthly price Yearly price Usage Claude Code Models Fable 5.1 Billing
Free $0 $0 Base allowance No Sonnet, Haiku No None
Pro $20/month $200/year (about $17/month) At least 5x Free per session Yes Opus, Sonnet, Haiku Usage credits only Monthly or yearly
Max 5x $100/month Not offered 5x Pro per session Yes Opus, Sonnet, Haiku Up to 50% of weekly limits Monthly only
Max 20x $200/month Not offered 20x Pro per session Yes Opus, Sonnet, Haiku Up to 50% of weekly limits Monthly only
Team Standard $25/seat/month $20/seat/month billed annually More than Pro Yes Opus, Sonnet, Haiku Usage credits only Monthly or annual

A few details the table can’t hold:

  • Claude Pro annual billing charges $200 up front. Anthropic rounds that to $17/month, a saving of $40 a year over monthly billing.
  • Max is monthly only. The Max plan help article says it is “currently available as a monthly subscription only.”
  • Local prices vary. Anthropic’s Pro help article says pricing differs by region, and some regions add tax at checkout.
  • Current models. The pricing page lists Fable 5.1, Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 4.5 as the latest models. Free gets Sonnet and Haiku only.

What does Claude Max add over Pro?

Claude Max adds more usage per session, Fable inside your plan limits, higher output limits and priority access at high-traffic times. The apps and features are otherwise the same as Pro.

  • Usage. Max 5x gets 5x and Max 20x gets 20x Pro’s allowance per 5-hour session. Both still have a weekly limit across all models that resets at a fixed time assigned to your account.
  • Fable. On Pro, Fable 5 and 5.1 run only on usage credits billed at API rates. Max can spend up to half of its weekly limit on Fable at no extra cost.
  • Priority and early access. The pricing page lists priority access at high traffic, higher output limits and early access to advanced features for both Max tiers.
  • Bigger promo credits. In Anthropic’s Claude Code cloud credit promotion, individual Max subscribers got $250 versus $100 for Pro. Claims closed on October 7, 2026, and claimed credit can be used until November 4.

Pro already includes Claude Code, Research, Opus, Claude Design, Slides and Docs, Claude in Chrome, the Microsoft 365 add-ins and projects without Free’s five-project cap. Upgrading to Max buys headroom, not new apps. Our Claude tool page lists the full feature set by plan.

Is Claude Max worth it? The cost math

Claude Max is worth it when Pro’s limits interrupt you several times a week, or when you would otherwise spend $80 or more a month on usage credits on top of Pro.

Here is what each plan costs per Pro-sized session allowance:

Plan Cost per year Session usage vs Pro Cost per 1x Pro allowance
Pro, billed monthly $240 1x $20/month
Pro, billed yearly $200 1x About $17/month
Max 5x $1,200 5x $20/month
Max 20x $2,400 20x $10/month

Three things stand out:

  • Max 5x is not a volume discount. It charges the same rate per unit of session usage as Pro billed monthly, and about 20% more than Pro billed yearly. You pay for the extra headroom, Fable and priority access.
  • Max 20x halves the rate. At $200 for 20x Pro’s session usage, Max 20x is the cheapest usage per dollar, but only if you actually use it.
  • The multipliers apply per session. Anthropic states the 5x and 20x figures for the 5-hour session allowance and publishes no fixed message counts for weekly limits. If your weekly cap is the bottleneck, test Max 5x for one month before jumping to 20x.

Fable changes the math for some users. If you would run Fable often on Pro, every Fable request is billed as usage credits, while Max covers it up to half of the weekly limit.

Who should stay on Claude Pro?

Stay on Claude Pro if you hit a limit less than once a week, mostly write or analyze documents, or use Claude Code in short bursts.

Pro fits these patterns:

  • Daily writing and research. Drafting, editing, summarizing reports and running Research a few times a day rarely needs more than Pro’s allowance.
  • Occasional coding. A developer who uses Claude Code for an hour or two of focused work, then switches tools, can usually stay inside one 5-hour session.
  • Predictable budgets. Pro yearly at $200 is the cheapest paid Claude plan per month, and Max cannot be billed yearly.
  • Rare Fable use. If you only need Fable now and then, paying for it with usage credits on Pro is cheaper than the extra $80 a month that Max 5x costs.

Pro users who run out once in a while can turn on usage credits rather than upgrade. Free users who never hit a wall may not need Pro at all; Pro gives at least 5x Free’s usage per session.

Claude Max 5x vs 20x: which tier fits your usage?

Pick Max 5x if Pro runs out most workdays. Pick Max 20x if Max 5x would still run out, usually because Claude Code or agents work for most of the day.

Max 5x ($100/month)

  • You run Claude Code for several hours a day and hit Pro’s 5-hour limit before lunch.
  • You upload long contracts, annual reports or codebases and ask follow-up questions all afternoon.
  • You use Fable regularly and want it covered by your plan instead of usage credits.
  • You run multi-step tasks from a conversation, now that Cowork’s features work inside regular Claude chats.

Max 20x ($200/month)

  • Claude Code is your main development environment for a full workday, often with several sessions open at once.
  • You let agents run long background tasks while you work on something else.
  • You already hit Max 5x limits, or you would spend more than $100 a month on credits on top of Max 5x.

Start with Max 5x unless you already know Max 5x is too small. Anthropic says upgrades take effect right away, so moving up mid-cycle costs only the difference.

Are usage credits cheaper than upgrading to Max?

Usage credits are cheaper than Max if you run out only occasionally. They bill at standard API rates and start only after your plan’s included limits are used up.

According to Anthropic’s usage credits help article:

  • Eligible plans: Pro, Max 5x and Max 20x.
  • Prepaid: you add funds in advance and can set a monthly spend limit or choose unlimited, with optional auto-reload.
  • Coverage: Claude conversations, Claude Code in the terminal, Research and project file processing.
  • Mobile billing: iOS and Google Play subscribers enable and buy credits on the web.
  • Expiry: credits generally don’t expire, but in some jurisdictions such as Japan they expire six months after purchase, effective September 10, 2026.

A simple rule: if your Pro bill plus credits passes $100 most months, Max 5x costs the same and gives you 5x Pro’s session usage. If you pass $200 on Max 5x plus credits, Max 20x is the better buy.

How do peak hours and limits affect Pro and Max?

Peak hours affect Pro and Max the same way: on weekdays from 13:00 to 19:00 UTC, 5-hour session limits drain faster in chat, while Claude Code on both plans has been exempt since May 6, 2026.

  • Plans affected: Free, Pro, Max and Team. Enterprise is not affected, and weekly limits don’t change. See the peak-hours entry and the live clock on Claude Watch.
  • Max priority access helps you get through at busy times, but Max session limits still drain faster during the peak window.
  • Claude Code limits went up. On May 6, 2026 Anthropic doubled Claude Code’s 5-hour limits on paid plans, and since September 14, 2026 Claude Code weekly limits are permanently 25% higher than the old baseline.
  • Current promotion: from October 1 to 15, 2026, work after creating or editing an artifact counts 50% less toward the 5-hour limit on Pro, Max and Team, and on Free since October 7 (details).

For timing tips, read our guide to Claude peak hours. For how sessions and weekly caps interact, see Claude usage limits explained.

How do you upgrade, downgrade or cancel?

Upgrades from Pro to Max take effect immediately with unused time credited, while downgrades and cancellations take effect at the end of your billing period.

  • Upgrading: Anthropic’s pricing page says unused time on your current plan is credited toward the new one, and the Max help article says upgrades are prorated for the rest of the billing cycle.
  • Annual Pro to Max: if your remaining Pro balance is larger than the Max price, the credit goes toward future subscription costs.
  • Google Play: subscribers pay the full new plan price, and unused value turns into extra days.
  • Downgrading: your chats, projects and files stay with your account.
  • Canceling and refunds: you can cancel anytime and keep access until the period ends. Payments are generally non-refundable unless Anthropic’s Consumer Terms or local law say otherwise.

Bottom line

Most people should stay on Claude Pro and pay yearly. Upgrade only when limits, not features, are the problem.

  • Light or weekly users: Free, or Pro billed monthly at $20 if you need Claude Code, Research or Opus.
  • Daily writers, students and analysts: Pro billed yearly at $200, with usage credits as a safety valve.
  • Developers who hit Pro’s limit most workdays: Max 5x at $100/month.
  • Full-time Claude Code users and agent-heavy workflows: Max 20x at $200/month, the lowest cost per unit of usage.
  • Small teams: Team Standard at $25/seat/month, or $20 billed annually.

Frequently asked questions

Claude Max is worth it if Pro's limits stop your work several times a week or you already spend $80 or more a month on usage credits. Max 5x costs $100/month for 5x Pro's session usage and includes Fable within limits. If you hit Pro's cap only occasionally, Pro plus usage credits costs less.

Both include everything in Pro, plus higher output limits and up to 50% of weekly limits on Fable. Max 5x costs $100/month for 5x Pro's usage per 5-hour session. Max 20x costs $200/month for 20x. Both are billed monthly only, according to Anthropic's Max plan help article.

No. As of October 2026, Anthropic's Max plan help article says Max is available as a monthly subscription only, and the pricing page lists no annual Max price. Only Pro has yearly billing: $200 billed up front, which works out to about $17/month instead of $20.

Yes. Claude Code is included in Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, but not in Free. It shares one usage pool with chat on web, desktop and mobile, so long coding sessions also reduce what you have left for regular conversations in the same 5-hour window.

Anthropic's pricing page says upgrades take effect right away and unused time on your current plan is credited toward the new one. If you pay for Pro yearly and your remaining balance exceeds the Max price, the Max help article says the credit is applied to future subscription costs.

No. Anthropic lists priority access at high-traffic times for Max, but Max session limits in chat still drain faster on weekdays from 13:00 to 19:00 UTC, as on Free, Pro and Team. Claude Code on Pro and Max has been exempt from that reduction since May 6, 2026.
