Claude Duet (2026): What It Is, Who Can Get It and How It Uses Your Limits
Claude Duet is Anthropic's proactive agent app, launched as a research preview on October 21, 2026. It is open by waitlist to Claude Pro and Max subscribers in the US only, at no extra charge, on iOS, Android and claude.ai. Duet shares your plan's usage limits with the rest of Claude, and its background checks count toward them.

Anthropic launched Claude Duet on October 21, 2026: a separate app where Claude works as a proactive agent, sends you a morning brief and keeps working in the cloud while you’re away. As of October 22, 2026, Duet is a research preview open by waitlist to Claude Pro and Max subscribers in the US, at no extra charge, and it draws on the same usage limits as the rest of Claude.
What is Claude Duet?
Claude Duet is a standalone Anthropic app in which Claude acts as a proactive agent: it messages you first, takes tasks by text or voice and works on its own computer in the cloud.
Anthropic’s announcement says it built Duet for professionals and small business owners, designed around Claude Opus 5.5. Each morning, Claude Duet sends a short brief on the most important items across your connected apps, then messages you only when something needs you. Tasks range from scheduling a meeting to a dashboard, a sales forecast or a web app.
Claude Duet has a virtual machine with its own browser, so your laptop or phone doesn’t have to stay on. It carries over your memory, skills and connected apps from your Claude account.
- Approvals: before Claude Duet sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document or deletes anything, it waits for your OK. Trading securities and moving money between accounts are off-limits even with approval.
- Connectors: Duet can use the more than 6,000 connectors and plugins in the Claude Marketplace, including Gmail, Slack, QuickBooks, Stripe, Gusto and Shopify.
- Purchases: Duet pays through Stripe’s Link wallet with a virtual card, or with Shop Pay.
What can’t Claude Duet do yet?
Anthropic says Claude Duet may misread a thread or misjudge what’s urgent, and it can miss something that arrives between check-ins. Personal errands such as booking tickets are weaker than work tasks, Duet can’t show you its browser yet, and it lives in its own app, separate from the main Claude app.
Who can get Claude Duet right now?
Only Claude Pro and Max subscribers in the US, and only after they clear a waitlist. Free, Team and Enterprise accounts and every other country are left out as of October 22, 2026.
The Claude Duet product page says the research preview is “on a waitlist for Claude Pro and Max subscribers in the US” and that “Team and Enterprise plans are not included yet.” Claude’s release notes list the launch on October 21, 2026.
| Plan | United States | Other countries |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Not included | Not included |
| Pro | Waitlist (research preview) | Not available yet |
| Max 5x and Max 20x | Waitlist (research preview) | Not available yet |
| Team | Not included yet | Not included yet |
| Enterprise | Not included yet | Not included yet |
Anthropic’s announcement says it is “starting today with Pro and Max users in the US,” but it hasn’t named a date or the next countries.
How much does Claude Duet cost?
Claude Duet has no separate price: during the research preview it is included in Claude Pro and Max, so the cost is your existing subscription.
Prices below are from Anthropic’s pricing page as of October 22, 2026, in USD and excluding tax. That page doesn’t list Duet as a plan feature yet, and Anthropic hasn’t said what Duet will cost after the preview.
| Plan | Price | Usage per 5-hour session | Claude Duet |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Baseline | Not included |
| Pro | $20/month, or $200/year (about $17/month) | At least 5x Free | Included, by waitlist |
| Max 5x | $100/month | 5x Pro | Included, by waitlist |
| Max 20x | $200/month | 20x Pro | Included, by waitlist |
Max is billed monthly only. If you’re on Free, the cheapest way in is Pro at $20/month, but that only buys you a place in the queue, not guaranteed access.
How does Claude Duet use your usage limits?
Claude Duet draws from the same 5-hour session and weekly limits as Claude chat and Claude Code, and its background checks count against them even when you aren’t messaging it.
Anthropic says Duet “shares your plan’s usage limits with the rest of Claude” and uses them differently than a typical conversation. Three things drive that usage:
- Background checks: Duet checks your connected accounts every few hours. Anthropic says checking nonstop “would use up your plan’s limits much faster.”
- Large tasks: building a financial model or a deck takes more model turns and background work than a quick reply.
- Your other Claude use: chat on web, desktop and mobile plus Claude Code all share one pool, says Anthropic’s pricing page. A heavy Duet day leaves less room for coding.
Anthropic hasn’t published per-task Duet costs, and its Duet pages don’t say whether usage credits can keep Duet running after you hit a limit. Our guide to Claude usage limits explains how the 5-hour and weekly caps interact.
How can you keep Claude Duet from draining your limits?
Tell Claude Duet to check in less often, connect only the apps it needs and hand it big jobs when your session has room, ideally outside weekday peak hours.
- Set the check-in rhythm. Anthropic says you can tell Duet what you want to hear about and how often.
- Connect what matters. You can disconnect any app Duet uses. Our advice: start with your inbox and calendar.
- Batch big tasks. Decks and financial models cost the most, so send them when Settings > Usage shows plenty of session left.
- Mind peak hours. On weekdays from 13:00 to 19:00 UTC, 5-hour session limits on Free, Pro, Max and Team drain faster. Only Claude Code on Pro and Max is exempt, and Anthropic hasn’t said anything about Duet and peak hours.
Because Duet works while your devices are off, you can hand it a large task at the end of your day. Peak hours don’t change weekly limits, so timing only stretches the session limit. Claude Watch shows whether peak hours apply right now, and our Claude peak hours guide converts the window to your time zone.
Should Claude Duet users pick Pro or Max?
Stay on Claude Pro if you already have it, and move to Max only if Duet plus your usual chat and Claude Code keep hitting limits.
- Pro, $20/month: fine for a morning brief, a few connected apps and the occasional larger task.
- Max 5x, $100/month: 5x Pro’s usage per session plus priority access at high traffic times. Worth it if Duet builds decks or models weekly and you code with Claude too.
- Max 20x, $200/month: for people who already hit Max 5x limits.
Anthropic hasn’t said whether Max subscribers come off the waitlist sooner, so don’t upgrade for a faster spot. Max’s monthly API credits, $100 on Max 5x and $200 on Max 20x, won’t stretch Duet either: they cover the Claude API and Agent SDK, not usage in the Claude apps, as our API credits guide explains. Our Claude Pro vs Max comparison has the full cost math, and the Claude tool page tracks current prices.
How do you join the Claude Duet waitlist?
Open Anthropic’s Claude Duet page, select Join the waitlist and fill in the form; Anthropic emails you when your access opens.
Anthropic hasn’t given waiting times. Once you’re in, Duet runs as a standalone app on iOS and Android, or on the web at claude.ai. Because Duet uses your Claude account, there is little to set up. The steps are in the how-to below.
How does Claude Duet compare with OpenAI Dots and Meta Muse?
Claude Duet, OpenAI Dots and Meta Muse are all always-on agents, but they differ on price: Duet comes with Claude Pro at $20/month, Dots needs ChatGPT Pro (from $100/month) or Business Premium, and Muse is free for most uses.
TechCrunch frames Duet as Anthropic’s rival to Muse and Dots. Facts we couldn’t confirm on the vendor’s own page are attributed.
| Claude Duet | OpenAI Dots | Meta Muse | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Launched | October 21, 2026 | September 29, 2026 | September 8, 2026 |
| Model | Claude Opus 5.5 | GPT-6 Astra (TechCrunch) | Muse Spark |
| Who can use it | Claude Pro and Max in the US, by waitlist | ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium in eligible markets (TechCrunch) | Rolling out in the US |
| Price | Included in Pro ($20/month) and Max (from $100/month) | ChatGPT Pro from $100/month for individuals (VentureBeat) | Free for most uses; paid plans for more |
| Where | iOS, Android, claude.ai | ChatGPT and Codex; messages via Slack and Teams (TechCrunch) | iOS, Android, muse.ai and WhatsApp |
Meta said on its third-quarter earnings call that Muse has more than 10 million users, TechCrunch reports, and plans to keep it free for most people while power users pay for top models or more tokens. Duet’s pitch is narrower: work tasks for professionals and small businesses. See our ChatGPT and Meta AI pages for those plans.
Bottom line
Claude Duet costs nothing extra for US Claude Pro and Max subscribers, but it spends the same limits you use for chat and Claude Code.
- US Pro and Max subscribers: join the waitlist now. It costs nothing, and you can set how often Duet checks in once you’re in.
- Heavy Claude Code users on Pro: watch Settings > Usage during your first week, since Duet’s background checks share your coding pool.
- Max-curious Pro users: don’t upgrade for Duet alone. Upgrade if Duet plus your normal work hits the weekly limit most weeks.
- Outside the US, or on Team and Enterprise: wait. Duet isn’t available to you yet, and Anthropic hasn’t named a date.
- Shopping around: Muse is the free option, and Dots makes sense only if you already pay for ChatGPT Pro or Business Premium.
