What changed for Claude in October 2026?
Claude got a temporary usage discount for artifact work, a cloud credit for Claude Code and a startup offer that filled up within days. Peak hours and weekly limits stayed the same.
Artifact usage promotion: 50% less session usage until October 15
From October 1 to October 15, 2026 at 11:59 PM PT, work that follows creating or editing an artifact counts 50% less toward Claude’s 5-hour session limit, according to Anthropic’s Help Center. Pro, Max and Team plans got the discount on October 1, and Free plans joined on October 7.
- In chats, the next 10 messages after an artifact is created or edited are discounted, up to 15 steps per reply.
- Cowork tasks started from Document, Presentation or Design get about 45 minutes of discounted work.
- Claude Code, the API, Claude in Slack, local and scheduled Cowork tasks, the standalone Claude Design app and Enterprise plans are excluded.
- Weekly limits don’t change, so the discount stretches a session, not a week. Anthropic says it may change or end the promotion early.
Claude Code cloud credit: spend it before November 4
The claim window for Claude Code’s cloud-session credit closed on October 7, 2026. Individual Pro subscribers who claimed it got $100 and Max subscribers $250 for Claude Code sessions that run on Anthropic’s servers. Unused credit expires on November 4, 2026 at 11:59 PM PT, and it covers cloud sessions only, not local Claude Code, chat or Cowork.
Claude for Startups: closed to new applications
On October 6, 2026, Anthropic added a free year of Claude Team for up to five seats and $1,000 in API credits to Claude for Startups. Within days, Anthropic said both offers were over capacity. As of October 14, the program page says the current cohort is full and Anthropic isn’t accepting new applications; it will announce the next cohort in its newsletter. Startups that already claimed the offers keep them, as our Claude for Startups entry explains.
What stayed the same
Claude peak hours still run on weekdays from 13:00 to 19:00 UTC, when 5-hour session limits on Free, Pro, Max and Team drain faster. Claude Code weekly limits have stayed 25% above the old baseline since September 14, 2026. The live clock on our home page shows whether it’s peak time where you are, and our guide to Claude usage limits explains how session and weekly caps interact.
What’s new with ChatGPT and Codex in October 2026?
GPT-5.5 retires from ChatGPT and Codex on October 14, 2026, and ChatGPT Pro now comes in three usage tiers: $100, $200 and $500 a month.
- GPT-5.5 retirement: on October 14, 2026, GPT-5.5 leaves ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex on all plans, according to OpenAI’s model docs. The API is unaffected. OpenAI points Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu users to GPT-6 Sol, and Free and Go users to GPT-6 Luna in the desktop app.
- Plans: Free costs $0, Go $8/month in the US and Plus $20/month. Plus adds GPT-6 advanced reasoning models, expanded deep research, more Codex usage and no ads.
- Pro tiers: the $100 tier gives 5x Plus usage, the $200 tier reopened to new sign-ups on September 29, 2026, and the new $500 tier has the most usage. Pro also adds Dot, an always-on agent.
- Pro $200 change: according to press reports, the $200 tier now includes 10x Plus usage instead of 20x. Existing subscribers keep the old allowance until October 29, 2026.
- Codex models: OpenAI recommends GPT-6.1 Sol for complex coding and agentic work and GPT-6 Luna for focused, repeatable tasks; GPT-6 Astra is its most capable model.
- Open-source maintainers: the Codex for Open Source program gives approved maintainers six months of ChatGPT Pro with Codex, and projects can apply for API credits from a $1 million fund.
US college students have until October 31 to claim 4 free months of ChatGPT Plus, worth $80. Plan-by-plan details are on our ChatGPT page and Codex page.
What did Google change for Gemini in October 2026?
Google released Gemini 4 Argon, its new flagship reasoning model, in the Gemini API on October 13, 2026, and keeps Gemini 3.8 Flash at half price until December 31. Its two consumer giveaways, a free student year and the Pixel 10 Pro bundle, are still open.
- Gemini 4 Argon: generally available in the Gemini API and Google AI Studio since October 13, 2026, according to Google’s release notes. It costs $2 per 1M input tokens and $10 per 1M output tokens through November 30, 2026, then $4 and $20 from December 1; Batch and Flex requests cost half. It has a 1M-token context window and isn’t available on the free tier or with the Google AI Pro plan.
- Gemini 3.8 Flash API: $0.75 per 1M input tokens and $3.75 per 1M output tokens on the paid Standard tier until December 31, 2026, according to Google’s Gemini API pricing page. On January 1, 2027, the rates double to $1.50 and $7.50. Context caching is also half price until the end of 2026, and the free tier stays free. Gemini 3.7 Flash was deprecated on October 8, and its API requests now route to 3.8 Flash.
- Free Gemini app users: since October 9, 2026, people without a Google AI plan default to Auto, which sends most prompts to Flash-Lite and harder ones to Flash or Pro, according to Google’s Gemini help center. Google AI Plus subscribers get an email with their own date.
- Students: eligible US college students get a free year of Google AI Pro, normally $19.99/month, and students in 140+ other markets get a free year of Google AI Plus. Redeem by December 31, 2026.
- Pixel buyers: a new Pixel 10 Pro, Pro XL or Pro Fold includes 12 months of Google AI Pro, and that offer ends on October 31, 2026. Pixel 11 Pro models include 6 months instead.
Gemini itself stays free with a Google Account. In the US, Google AI Plus costs $4.99/month, Google AI Pro $19.99/month and Google AI Ultra $99.99 or $199.99 a month. Developers can try most Gemini models free in Google AI Studio.

Since September 24, 2026, chatting with Lovable costs no credits up to a daily allowance on Free, Pro and Business workspaces, and Lovable says this pricing applies through October 31. Chat that generates images or video, or hands work off to Plan or Build, still uses credits.
Kiro: free for students and startups
Students at eligible universities get 1,000 Kiro credits a month free for one year, the same monthly allowance as Kiro Pro at $20/month. Early-stage startups up to Series A can apply for free Kiro Pro+ and a year of credits until December 31, 2026. One practical note: Kiro IDE versions earlier than 0.11.133 and CLI versions earlier than 1.28.2 stop connecting on November 9, 2026.
