What you get

Codex for Students puts $100 in ChatGPT credits on a verified student's own ChatGPT account, listed as 2,500 credits on the usage page. The credits take over once the plan's included Codex usage runs out, so work continues instead of stopping until the limit resets. They attach to a Free, Go, Plus or Pro account and lapse 12 months after the grant date.

OpenAI's pricing docs estimate a typical Sol task at 2–15 credits, so the 2,500 student credits cover roughly 167 to 1,250 such tasks. Model choice changes the math: GPT-6.1 Sol costs 50 credits per million input tokens and 250 per million output tokens, while GPT-6 Luna costs a twentieth of that. For scale, $100 matches 5 months of ChatGPT Plus at $20, but the credits add usage, not a plan upgrade.

Codex for Students asks for residence in the US or Canada at the moment you claim, on top of enrollment, so a student abroad for a semester should wait until back home. The 12-month clock starts at the grant, not at first use. OpenAI's docs say ChatGPT Work shares credits and limits with Codex, and Free and Go list only GPT-6 Luna for Codex; the student page doesn't say whether the credits unlock other models.

How to get it

  1. 1Open OpenAI's Codex for Students page and select Claim now.
  2. 2Sign in with a ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus or Pro account.
  3. 3Verify your student status with your university email.

Is it for you?

A good fit

  • US and Canadian university students on ChatGPT Plus who hit Codex limits during project crunches and would otherwise wait for a reset.
  • Students on ChatGPT Free or Go who want to try Codex on a class project without starting a paid subscription.
  • Computer science students with a capstone, thesis or hackathon in the next 12 months, so the 2,500 credits get used before expiring.

Look elsewhere

  • Students outside the US and Canada, who can look at the GitHub Copilot Student plan or Google's free year of AI Plus in 140+ markets.
  • Students building their own apps on the OpenAI API, since these credits don't pay for API keys or Codex run on an API key.
  • Recent graduates and anyone whose enrollment has lapsed, since the credits go only to current students at US or Canadian universities.

Good to know

  • One offer per student, after successful verification.
  • You must study at a degree-granting university in the US or Canada and live there when you claim.
  • These are ChatGPT credits for Codex, not API credits.

When it ends

Unused Codex for Students credits disappear 12 months after the grant date, and the ChatGPT plan you claimed them on stays as it was. More usage after that means waiting for your plan's limits to reset or, on Plus and Pro, buying extra credits.
