What you get

GitHub Copilot Fusion is an entry in the model picker that chooses models for each prompt instead of you. Depending on the effort level, it answers with one model, lets an efficient model draft while a judge decides whether to escalate, or has several models critique a draft before it is revised. Through November 30, 2026, GitHub takes 30% off the model costs of those calls on paid plans, so Fusion requests use fewer AI Credits than the same models would at full rate.

Copilot Fusion's discount matters most on plans with a fixed credit allowance. Copilot Pro is $10/month with 1,500 monthly AI Credits, Pro+ $39 with 7,000 and Max $100 with 20,000, so cheaper requests stretch the same allowance further before extra usage kicks in. Fusion Standard picks one model per task and is the frugal setting; High and Max add review calls when a task warrants them.

Copilot Fusion only shows its final answer, and drafts it discards aren't rolled back in your workspace, so review file edits before you commit. Fusion doesn't start subagents, and admins can limit which models it may use. After November 30, Fusion still costs nothing extra by itself, but each model call is billed at its standard rate again.

How to get it

  1. 1Update VS Code, the GitHub Copilot app, Copilot CLI or your JetBrains IDE to the latest version.
  2. 2Open the model picker and choose Copilot Fusion instead of a single model.
  3. 3Pick an effort level: Fusion Standard for everyday work, High or Max for harder tasks.

Is it for you?

A good fit

  • Copilot Pro, Pro+ or Max subscribers who often run out of monthly AI Credits before the month ends.
  • Developers who switch models by hand for each task and would rather let Copilot pick at a lower price this month.

Look elsewhere

  • Copilot Free and Student users, since the 30% discount is limited to paid plans.
  • Developers who mostly rely on code completions and next edit suggestions, which use no AI Credits on paid plans anyway.

Good to know

  • Copilot Fusion is billed for each model it uses at that model's standard rate; there is no separate charge for Fusion.
  • Fusion High and Max can call more than one model per task, so a task can use more AI Credits than Fusion Standard.
  • Copilot Free and Copilot Student aren't paid plans, so the discount doesn't apply to them.

When it ends

From December 1, 2026, Copilot Fusion bills each model it uses at its standard rate. Fusion stays in the model picker, so check your AI Credit usage and switch to Fusion Standard or a single model if High and Max use too much.
