Key features

Copilot inside Office apps

Drafts, edits and summarizes in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote and Teams, for the subscription owner only.

One app for work and home

The renamed Microsoft Copilot app takes a personal or a work account, and keeps the two experiences and their data separate.

Cowork agent (preview)

Describe a job and Cowork creates files, drafts email, manages calendar and OneDrive items and runs prompts on a schedule.

Desktop, web and mobile

Copilot runs in Windows and Mac apps, on the web at copilot.com and in the iOS and Android apps with one sign-in.

AI credits and usage limits

Personal and Family include AI credits and feature limits; remaining credits appear in your Microsoft account under Services & subscriptions.

Browser actions through Edge

Copilot can click, scroll and type on websites using the local browser in Microsoft Edge while you stay in control.

Use cases

  • Summarize a long Outlook thread and draft the reply without leaving your inbox.
  • Turn a Word document you already wrote into a first-draft PowerPoint deck.
  • Ask Cowork to pull numbers from OneDrive files into a spreadsheet and draft the email that sends it.
  • Use free Copilot chat and image creation on your phone without any Microsoft 365 subscription.

  • Microsoft offers a one-month free trial of Personal, Family and Premium, though terms and payment requirements vary by region.

What is Microsoft Copilot?

Microsoft Copilot is Microsoft’s assistant for chat, images, files and work tasks. It runs at copilot.com, in desktop apps for Windows and Mac, and in iOS and Android apps. Sign in with a work account and it switches to your organization’s Copilot; personal and work data stay apart.

What changed in 2026

  • The Microsoft 365 Copilot app became simply the Microsoft Copilot app, and consumer chats and content merged into it.
  • Podcasts, Group Chat and consumer Deep Research retired on August 18, 2026.
  • Copilot Tasks moved to Cowork; Personal and Family subscribers can view old tasks but must upgrade to run new ones.
  • Microsoft 365 Pro now tops the individual lineup at $99.99 a month with the highest AI limits.

Limitations

AI features belong to the subscription owner and can’t be shared, and Microsoft 365 Basic has none. Every plan has usage limits and AI credits that pause features until they reset. Pro bills monthly only, and Cowork’s remote browser isn’t ready — web actions run through Microsoft Edge on your own device.

Microsoft Copilot FAQ

Yes. Microsoft offers a limited free version, subject to available capacity and limits, covering chat, image creation and file uploads. When you hit a limit you can come back later or move to a paid Microsoft 365 plan.

Both retired for consumers on August 18, 2026, along with Group Chat. Group chat threads, messages and images were not carried forward, so anything worth keeping had to be saved before that date.

Cowork is the agent that replaced Copilot Tasks in 2026. It creates and edits Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF files, drafts email, manages calendar and OneDrive files and runs scheduled prompts. It needs Microsoft 365 Premium or Pro.

Microsoft 365 Pro at $99.99/month has the highest usage limits and the most agentic AI, then Premium at $19.99. Personal and Family sit lower with AI credits and feature limits, and Microsoft 365 Basic has no AI features.

No. Family shares the apps and storage with up to six people, but Copilot features in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook work only for the subscription owner. Everyone else needs their own eligible subscription.
