Notion AI Credits Explained (2026): Standard vs Select and the November 2 Switch
Since October 19, 2026, Notion Business and Enterprise seats include 1,500 Standard credits a month for AI on Auto and 500 Select credits for picking models or running Custom Agents. Existing workspaces switch on November 2. Credits don't roll over or pool, extra Notion credits cost $10 per 1,000, and members can connect ChatGPT Plus, Pro or Go.

Notion changed how its AI is metered on October 19, 2026: Business and Enterprise seats now include 1,500 Standard credits and 500 Select credits per member each month. The system is live for new workspaces and reaches existing ones on November 2, 2026. Members on those plans can also connect a ChatGPT Plus, Pro or Go plan to Notion Agent, while Free and Plus keep a limited AI trial, as of October 22, 2026.
What did Notion announce on October 19, 2026?
Notion announced a two-part credit system for Notion AI, an upgraded Auto model router and a way to use your ChatGPT plan inside Notion Agent. Co-founder Akshay Kothari’s announcement post lists the main changes:
- Standard and Select credits on every Business and Enterprise seat (details below).
- A smarter Auto. Notion says Auto matched Opus 5.5 and Astra across 20+ common use cases at about 90% lower average cost, so credits go “about 10× further.”
- Bring your own AI. ChatGPT plans connect to Notion Agent now; bring-your-own-key is in private alpha for Enterprise.
- Custom Agents without buying credits first, since your own agents start on Select credits.
- AI Command Center (coming soon) with usage by member and agent, spending limits and alerts.
What are Notion’s Standard and Select credits?
Standard credits pay for AI work where Notion’s Auto router picks the model; Select credits pay for work where you pick the model or run your own Custom Agent. Both are per-member allowances on Business and Enterprise, according to Notion’s help article on managing AI credits.
| Credit type | What it pays for | Included per member | If you run out |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | Notion Agent on Auto, AI editing, page translation, AI blocks, AI database formulas, AI Meeting Notes (from December 1, 2026) | 1,500 a month, no rollover | Paused until the monthly reset, unless an admin allows Notion credits |
| Select | Notion Agent with a model you pick, Custom Agents you own | 500 a month, no rollover | Paused until the monthly reset, unless an admin allows Notion credits |
| Notion credits | High-credit-consumption models such as Fable and Astra, workspace-funded Custom Agents, agents run through the API or a connected app, usage beyond Standard or Select | Not included; admins buy them | Admins buy more or change the allocation |
Standard and Select balances can’t be pooled across the workspace, moved between members or traded for each other, and both reset at the start of your billing cycle. Notion says amounts may vary by plan and purchase arrangement; check yours under Settings → Notion AI → Usage. Per Notion’s eligible-features table, Database Autofill doesn’t currently reduce your balance, and everyday Notion MCP and API reads and writes use no credits.
What changes on November 2 for existing Notion customers?
Existing Business and Enterprise workspaces move from an AI “usage allowance” with no published size to the 1,500/500 credit split on November 2, 2026, and admins get an email with the details. New workspaces have used the new system since October 19.
| Before (Notion help center, archived October 12, 2026) | After the switch | |
|---|---|---|
| Included AI per Business or Enterprise seat | A “usage allowance for certain Notion AI features,” no number published | 1,500 Standard + 500 Select credits a month |
| Expensive models | Premium models spent Notion credits | High-credit-consumption models spend Notion credits; other models you pick spend Select credits |
| Custom Agents | Free to try, then workspace Notion credits at $10 per 1,000 | Owner’s Select credits first, then Notion credits if an admin allows |
| Hitting the limit | Temporary pause until access refreshed, or owners allowed Notion credits | Paused until the monthly reset, or admins allow Notion credits |
| ChatGPT plan in Notion Agent | Not available | Plus, Pro or Go, in your personal Notion Agent only |
Custom Agents created before November 2 keep drawing from shared workspace credits, per Notion’s Custom Agents credit guide. Enterprise customers mid-contract also switch on November 2, with credits set by plan at renewal. AI Meeting Notes starts consuming Standard credits on December 1, 2026, at about 10 credits per one-hour meeting.
How far do 1,500 Standard and 500 Select credits go?
By Notion’s own estimates, 1,500 Standard credits cover about 300 simple or 60 complex tasks on Auto each month, while 500 Select credits buy only about 3–10 tasks if you pick Opus 5.5 yourself. Notion publishes the per-task estimates in its Auto help article; the two right-hand columns are our math.
| Task type | Notion’s examples | Auto, credits per task | Opus 5.5, credits per task | Tasks per 1,500 Standard on Auto | Tasks per 500 Select on Opus 5.5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Simple | Polish an email, translate a document | 5 | 50 | ~300 | ~10 |
| Medium | Write a work report, summarize a one-hour meeting | 10 | 85 | ~150 | ~6 |
| Complex | Draft a performance review, create and configure databases | 25 | 150 | ~60 | ~3 |
The same article reports Auto’s average cost was 87% lower than Opus 5.5 in Notion’s testing, and Notion expects “the vast majority of users are unlikely to run out” of monthly credits.
What do Free, Plus and student plans get?
Notion Free and Plus get no Standard or Select credits, only a limited number of complimentary AI responses, after which an upgrade to Business or Enterprise is required. Notion’s pricing page lists Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes and Enterprise Search from Business up.
| Plan | Price (USD) | Notion AI | Monthly AI credits per member | Can buy Notion credits | Can connect ChatGPT |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Limited trial | None | No | No |
| Plus | $12/member/month, $10 billed yearly | Limited trial | None | No | No |
| Education Plan | Free, 1 member | No AI allowance listed | None | No | No |
| Business | $24/member/month, $20 billed yearly | Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes, Enterprise Search | 1,500 Standard + 500 Select | Yes | Yes |
| Enterprise | Custom | Business AI plus zero data retention with LLM providers | 1,500 Standard + 500 Select, may vary by contract | Yes | Yes |
Students and educators can claim Notion’s free Education Plan with a school email, ongoing as of October 22, 2026. Notion’s education help page lists up to 100 guests, unlimited uploads and 30-day page history, but no AI allowance, and upgrading that workspace to a paid plan permanently ends its Education eligibility. Our AI student discounts guide covers AI tools with student pricing, and the deals page tracks live offers.
What happens when you run out, and what do extra credits cost?
When Standard or Select credits run out, the features that use them pause until your monthly reset unless an admin has turned on Notion credits; the other balance keeps working. Out of Select but not Standard? Switch Notion Agent back to Auto. Leftover Select credits never cover Standard features. The admin switch, “Allow workspace to use Notion credits after AI limit is reached” under Settings → Notion AI, is off by default.
Extra Notion credits are sold only on Business and Enterprise. Notion’s Notion credits help page lists two prices:
- Monthly credits: $10 per 1,000, billed with your subscription, reset each month.
- Annual credits: $13 per 1,000, paid upfront on annual plans, expire at renewal.
Admins get alerts at 80% and 100% of Notion credit usage. Subscriptions billed through the App Store or Google Play can’t buy Notion credits inside Notion.
Can you use ChatGPT Plus in Notion?
Yes, if your Notion workspace is on Business or Enterprise: members can connect a ChatGPT Plus, Pro or Go account to their personal Notion Agent. It doesn’t work on Free or Plus Notion plans, for guests or with Custom Agents, according to Notion’s ChatGPT help article.
The key rule: your ChatGPT plan pays only when you pick a specific GPT model. Auto still draws Standard credits, and a non-GPT model draws Select credits; the model picker shows which plan pays before you send. If you hit your ChatGPT limit, Notion Agent asks you to switch to workspace Notion credits and switches back when ChatGPT usage returns. Notion says these chats don’t appear in ChatGPT history or memory. In the US, ChatGPT Go costs $8/month and Plus $20/month, per our ChatGPT tracker.
How do you make Notion AI credits last?
Leave Notion Agent on Auto for everyday work: Notion’s estimates put Auto at 5–25 credits per task versus 50–150 for Opus 5.5.
- Save Select credits for when Auto’s answer isn’t good enough.
- Send GPT chats to your ChatGPT plan. If you already pay for ChatGPT, connect it and pick a GPT model for long chats instead of spending Select credits.
- Fund shared Custom Agents from the workspace. A shared agent bills its owner’s Select credits by default; ask an admin for a workspace budget and set a per-agent cap.
- Plan for meeting notes from December 1. At about 10 Standard credits per hour-long meeting, 20 hours of meetings use 200 of your 1,500.
For tactics that work across subscriptions, see our guide to saving money on AI subscriptions.
Bottom line
Notion’s new credits give Business teams a clear number to budget against, but they add nothing for Free and Plus users.
- Free and Plus users: nothing changes, and a ChatGPT plan can’t unlock Notion AI for you. Our best free AI tools list covers free AI beyond Notion’s trial.
- Business teams on Auto: 1,500 Standard credits cover about 300 simple tasks per member.
- Model pickers and Custom Agent builders: 500 Select credits go fast on top models. Connect ChatGPT if you pay for it, and have an admin fund team agents.
- Admins: decide on the Notion credits switch before November 2, and budget extra usage at $10 per 1,000 credits.
- Students: keep the free Education Plan for notes; it carries no Notion AI credits.
How to connect your ChatGPT plan to Notion Agent
Step by step
Be a member, not a guest, of a Notion Business or Enterprise workspace, and have a ChatGPT Plus, Pro or Go account.
In Notion, go to Settings → Notion AI → Usage. Or open the model picker in Notion Agent and look under Subscriptions.
Under Connected subscriptions, select Connect next to ChatGPT, or select Connect ChatGPT plan in the model picker.
Sign in to ChatGPT, allow Notion to connect to your account, then return to Notion.
In Notion Agent's model picker, choose a specific GPT model. Auto or a non-GPT model keeps using your Notion credits.
