Canva released Canva Craft, its first image generation model built in-house, on October 22, 2026, and says it is available to all Canva users globally, Free plan included. Craft runs in Dream Lab and through Canva’s API, and every generation draws on the same monthly AI allowance as Canva’s other AI tools. As of October 22, 2026, Canva hasn’t published a Craft-specific image count for any plan.
What is Canva Craft?
Canva Craft is Canva’s first image generation model, built and trained from scratch by Canva Research rather than licensed from another lab. According to Canva’s announcement, it works in two stages: a planning model writes a detailed composition plan, then a rendering model draws the image.
The specs Canva lists for Craft:
- Resolution: up to 2K.
- Shapes: more than 30 aspect ratios, plus custom ratios.
- Languages: prompts in any language, with text rendered in 55 languages.
- Editing: outputs work with Magic Layers, Canva’s image-to-design tool, so a generated image can become an editable design.
- Safety: Craft is covered by Canva Shield, with input and output moderation and reporting tools.
TechCrunch reports that researchers from Leonardo.ai, which Canva acquired in 2024, contributed to Craft. Canva told TechCrunch it trained the model on human-designed templates from its library, such as posters, social posts, presentations, infographics and menus. Canva also expects Craft to cut its API costs, because it currently relies on several image models.
Is Canva Craft free?
Yes, Canva Craft is free to try: Canva says it is “available starting today to all Canva users globally,” and that includes Canva Free. The limit is the AI allowance. Canva Free includes up to 20 uses of Standard or Premium AI tools a month, shared across every AI feature in Canva, not only images.
Canva hasn’t said how many Craft images one use covers. Its AI usage help page doesn’t name Dream Lab or Craft, and the Dream Lab help page only says that generating images, reference images and Boost resolution can use AI allowance. Canva also says its estimates assume simple prompts and the lowest-power tool in each tier, so complex work gives fewer uses.
Canva Free allowances reset at 12:00 a.m. UTC on the first of each month. Ultra AI tools, Canva’s most expensive tier, aren’t available on Canva Free at all.
What are Canva’s AI limits on each plan?
Canva Pro raises the shared AI allowance about tenfold over Free, and every paid plan unlocks Ultra AI tools. These are the allowances on Canva’s pricing page and help center as of October 22, 2026, with US prices on yearly billing, excluding tax:
| Plan | Price | Monthly AI allowance (estimate) | Ultra AI tools |
|---|---|---|---|
| Canva Free | $0 | Up to 20 uses of Standard or Premium AI tools | No |
| Canva Pro | $144/year for one person | Up to 200 Premium or 20 Ultra uses | Yes |
| Canva Business | $250/year per person | Up to 400 Premium or 40 Ultra uses | Yes |
| Canva Enterprise | Contact sales | Up to 400 Premium or 40 Ultra uses | Yes |
| Canva Education | Free for eligible K-12 educators and students | Up to 200 Premium or 20 Ultra uses | Yes |
| Canva for Nonprofits | Free for eligible nonprofits | Up to 200 Premium or 20 Ultra uses | Yes |
On paid plans, Standard AI tools don’t count toward the allowance, subject to fair use. On team plans, each member gets their own allowance rather than a shared pool, and paid allowances reset on the billing date each month.
Heavy users can add AI Pass, which Canva’s help center prices at $100 per person per month. Canva says AI Pass gives 40x more AI on Pro, Teams and Nonprofits, or 20x more on Business. AI Pass isn’t sold for Canva Free, Education, Enterprise, free trials or prepaid plans. Our Canva page tracks these prices.
How do you use Canva Craft in Dream Lab?
Canva Craft lives in Dream Lab, Canva’s AI image generator. Canva’s announcement says to open Dream Lab from the bottom-left panel, while Canva’s help center says to select More on the Canva homepage, then Dream Lab.
Once inside, Dream Lab “generates up to four images per prompt,” according to Canva’s help center. You can add a reference image to guide the style, edit results with follow-up prompts, or boost resolution. Canva says reference images may use AI allowance and Boost resolution does, and the app notifies you before a feature spends it.
To see what you have left, select your profile icon, then Settings, then Billing, and look under AI usage.
Is there a Canva Craft API?
Yes. Canva says Craft is available to developers through its Public API, and lists Canva MCP Server support as coming soon. TechCrunch reports that Canva plans to bring its image generation into third-party chatbots such as ChatGPT and Gemini through MCP.
Canva’s Connect API added image generation endpoints in preview on October 1, 2026, including POST /v1/image-generations. Canva’s developer changelog says “Starting a job consumes the user’s AI credit allowance,” so API generations spend the signed-in user’s Canva allowance. Canva hasn’t published a separate per-image price.
As of October 22, 2026, Canva’s developer changelog doesn’t list a Craft model ID. Canva’s October 2 developer announcement names lucid_origin and z_image_turbo as models you can pin, and warns that preview APIs may get breaking changes.
Canva also says two cheaper variants, Craft-fast and Craft-ultrafast, are coming, designed for high-quality images at a lower cost than leading frontier models. Canva hasn’t given dates or prices for either.
How good is Canva Craft?
PromoClock doesn’t run image benchmarks, so the only ranking data so far is Canva’s own, citing DesignArena, a crowdsourced leaderboard for AI design. Canva says Craft “debuted as the fourth most advanced image generation model on DesignArena” and claims these category results:
- People & Portraits: first, out of 87 models.
- Landscapes & Nature: first, out of 85 models.
- Abstract & Patterns: second.
- Products: fourth.
On that basis Canva calls itself the world’s second most advanced AI lab for image generation. Crowdsourced rankings move as new models arrive, so treat these as launch-day claims. Canva’s announcement doesn’t publish head-to-head results against named models such as Google’s Nano Banana, Midjourney or Adobe Firefly.
On paper, Craft is aimed at design work more than art. Planning the layout before rendering, legible text in 55 languages and a direct path into editable Canva designs matter most for posters, social posts and menus.
Canva Craft vs Nano Banana, Midjourney, Firefly and Ideogram: which costs less?
Canva Craft comes bundled with a full design editor, while dedicated generators publish clearer per-image allowances. Here is how the free tiers and entry plans compare, using the prices we track as of October 2026:
| Tool | Free tier | Entry paid plan |
|---|---|---|
| Canva (Craft) | Up to 20 Standard or Premium AI uses a month, shared across all Canva AI | Pro, $144/year |
| Leonardo.ai | 150 fast tokens a day; free images are public | Essential, $12/month ($10 billed yearly) |
| Adobe Firefly | Free daily generations | Standard, $9.99/month with 2,000 credits |
| Midjourney | No free plan | Basic, $10/month ($8 billed yearly) |
| Ideogram | 30 credits a week | Plus, $20/month ($15 billed yearly) |
| ChatGPT | Limited, slower image generation | Go, $8/month (US) |
| Gemini (Nano Banana) | Image generation and editing with a Google Account | Google AI Plus, $4.99/month (US) |
A few things the table hides:
- Leonardo.ai is also owned by Canva, and its free plan refreshes daily instead of monthly.
- Gemini is the simplest free route to Google’s Nano Banana models if you don’t need a design editor.
- Ideogram is the closest rival for text-heavy posters, with Ideogram 4.0 built for typography.
- Midjourney is the only one here without a free plan.

How can you get Canva Pro AI limits for free?
Canva Education and Canva for Nonprofits are the two official ways to get a paid-level AI allowance at no cost. Both include up to 200 Premium or 20 Ultra AI uses a month, the same as Canva Pro.
- Canva Education is free for K-12 educators, their students and qualified districts. Higher education is offered separately through Canva Campus. Our student discounts guide lists similar offers from other AI tools.
- Canva for Nonprofits gives eligible organizations a free subscription with Pro features for one team of up to 50 users.
- Free trials of Pro and Business won’t help you test Craft at volume: Canva’s pricing page says the AI allowance during a trial is the same as Canva Free.

Bottom line
Canva Craft is worth trying today because it costs nothing extra, but Canva Free’s 20 monthly AI uses run out fast if images are your main job.
- Casual users: try Craft on Canva Free and watch the AI usage meter.
- Social creators and small businesses already in Canva: Pro at $144/year gives about 10x Free’s allowance plus the editor.
- Teachers and K-12 students: use Canva Education before paying for anything.
- Developers: test the preview API, but wait until Canva documents a Craft model ID before building production workflows on it.
- Artists who mainly want images: Midjourney, Leonardo.ai or free Gemini still give clearer image allowances than Canva’s shared pool.
