One API for image and video models, plus an MCP connection for Claude, Cursor and other agent clients.

What is Ideogram?

Ideogram is a generative media platform built around its own image models, with creative apps, an API and MCP access. Its models target design work where words must be legible, such as posters, book covers, merch and ads.

Ideogram 4.0 launched on June 3, 2026 as the company’s first open-weight foundation model. It reads prompts as structured JSON, handles 256 to 2048 pixels per side, and runs both as downloadable weights and inside Ideogram.

What stands out

  • Reliable typography, plus Layerize Text for changing copy without re-prompting.
  • A model catalog that also includes models from other research labs.
  • Enterprise options include legal indemnification, custom SSO and private custom models.

Limitations

  • Older prompts can behave differently with 4.0, which works best with structured, JSON-style prompts.
  • Subscription priority credits expire at the end of each billing cycle.
  • Custom model training is limited on Pro and Team, with full training reserved for Enterprise.
  • The site lists an iPhone app only; no Android app is offered there.

Ideogram FAQ

Yes, with limits. Eligible free accounts receive weekly slow credits when signing in with Google, Apple or Microsoft and can run one generation at a time. Free images are published publicly, and there are no free trials of paid plans.

Yes. Ideogram says it doesn't claim ownership of generated images and you're free to use them for any purpose, including commercial use, subject to its Terms of Service.

It's open-weight. Ideogram published the 4.0 weights on Hugging Face and code on GitHub in June 2026 for local use and customization under its license, and commercial deployments get a license matched to their scale.

Generation moves to the slow queue, where wait times depend on server load. AI editing features such as Editing with AI and Image Reference need priority credits, so they pause until credits reset or you top up.

Only on a paid plan. Images are published to the community by default, but Plus and Pro subscribers can generate unpublished images, unpublish earlier ones and delete images.
